Vice
President Biden accused Republican presidential candidates of “beating”
on Hispanics during an address to a Hispanic group on Wednesday.
In
a surprise appearance at a fundraiser hosted by the Latino Victory
Project PAC, Biden said he saw Hispanics hanging their heads at a recent
event because of comments
on immigration made by GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
“People
walked in like literally down because of the beating, the beating
Hispanics are taking at the hands of the Republican caucus — I mean the
Republican presidential
race,” Biden said, according to a video obtained by CNN.
Biden said Republicans “don’t remotely speak for America.”
“The
American people are so much better,” he said. “They are so far beyond.
They are so, so, so much different than these guys who are appealing to
everything from homophobia
to this notion of the like know-nothing party of the late 1800s.”
Biden,
who is mulling a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, also
touted his legislative efforts to increase minority voter turnout.
“Matter of fact, I co-sponsored the first motor voter registration bill that passed,” the vice president said.
Latino Victory Project executive director Cristóbal Alex commended the vice president for his remarks.
“We
thought the Republicans would take their 2012 autopsies more
seriously,” Alex said, referring to the GOP’s efforts to reach out to
minorities after lackluster Hispanic
support in the last election.
Biden is expected to announce his 2016 decision within the month.
