A major Hispanic lawmaker is backing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) announced on Thursday he is supporting Clinton’s Oval Office bid next year.
“No
leader comes better tested in the halls of Congress and in the foreign
capitals of today’s international hotspots than Secretary Clinton,”
Becerra, the chairman of
the House Democratic Caucus, said in a statement.
Becerra argued that he is supporting Clinton’s campaign based on her foreign policy experience and economic policies.
He additionally praised her for promising to reform America’s immigration system should she become commander in chief.
“There
is no stronger leader for hard-working Americans who dream to own their
own home, send their kids to college and earn a secure retirement,” he
said.
“Secretary Clinton has always been a fighter for our country’s most important causes,” Becerra added.
“Let’s send her to the White House so she can move these issues — and many more — for us and with us to the finish line.”
Clinton
is currently the heavy favorite for the Democratic nomination next
election cycle. No House Democrats have endorsed any of the candidates
challenging her for the
Democratic nomination.
The
most recent RealClearPolitics average of polls finds her leading her
party’s coronation hunt by more than 30 points nationwide.
